Born in Turkey, raised in Germany, living in the Netherlands, singer/composer (the connotation of “songwriter” would be misleading here) Esra Dalifan certainly knows what it means to cross borders. Which is what she does in her music. It is basically jazz, no doubt. But her fondness of traditional Turkish and Arazi music lends her songs a unique atmosphere with some surprising changes in tempo und mood.
With her band Fidan she creates and record little master pieces. Their first album was released in 2007 the second in March 2010. Besides her work with Fidan Esra Dalifan performs with an Ensemble called Gandhi Bazaar, made up appropriately of artists of different nationalities and musical backgrounds. Seemingly effortlessly her voice bridges every gap, making even the most abrupt and unusual turns in tune or timing sound natural and flowing. Esra Dalifan once started out as a music therapist and, indeed, listening to her makes one feel much better.
