Audio specialist Sennheiser to extend its headquarters

At a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, Professor Dr Jörg Sennheiser, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG, heralded the start of building work on a new production and technology centre at Sennheiser’s headquarters in Wennebostel (Wedemark). Sennheiser’s second production plant in near-by Burgdorf will relocate to the new 15-million-euro manufacturing centre. “We will be housing production under one roof in the most modern of environments and with the best possible equipment. This will in turn offer greater efficiency and seamless links with our research and development division,” explained Professor Dr Sennheiser.

With a floor area in the region of 4,200 square metres, the new production and technology building will be constructed next to, and linked with, the existing production centre. Reorganisation of all manufacturing processes, including material flow-throughs and production sequences, will make sure production is as up-to-date and streamlined as possible. “This means we’ll be able to offer an attractive workplace to our Burgdorf employees,” explained Volker Bartels, President of Manufacturing and Logistics, spokesperson for Sennheiser’s Executive Team. Building work should be completed by November 2009, with production scheduled to relocate later in the same month.

The new building will have two floors, and there will be two galleried areas (a total floor area of 13,500 square metres). It will house pre-production, production facilities, assembly workstations, manual assembly, test areas and offices. The adjacent production buildings will contain the clean room together with circuit board manufacturing, as well as Neumann microphone and Sennheiser condenser microphone assembly areas. “Moreover, the new production centre will have a spacious production technology lab,” explains Mr Bartels. “This is where workstations and operating and testing equipment will be developed, evaluated and optimised in close cooperation between the development and production departments. This will enable us to build on our products’ technical edge.”

The new production and technology centre is part of a comprehensive development strategy for the site, which features plans for more construction work and a reorganisation of existing structures and buildings. “The company has enjoyed strong growth in the last few years,” explained Professor Dr Sennheiser. “This extension not only gives us the space we desperately need, but allows us to enhance our headquarters and the development of the Sennheiser Group worldwide.”

The Sennheiser Group, with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. The family-owned company, which was established in 1945, recorded sales of over €395 million in 2007, 83% of which were generated abroad. Sennheiser employs almost 2,000 people worldwide, around 55% of whom are in Germany. Sennheiser has manufacturing plants in Germany, Ireland and the USA, and is represented worldwide by subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark (Nordic), Russia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, China, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as by long-term trading partners in many other countries.
