Honoured: Hannover University awards Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser the Karmarsch Medal

Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser was awarded the Karmarsch Medal at Hannover’s Leibniz University on Thursday. The medal of honour has been awarded for the past 84 years by the Friends of Hannover University “for outstanding services to technology and the economy”. Alongside the university’s President, Prof. Dr. Erich Barke, over 400 representatives of the worlds of politics, culture, science and commerce attended the ceremony, honouring Sennheiser as an entrepreneur for whom sophisticated technology and high quality are equally important as the social responsibility towards future generations.

“Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser has successfully strengthened the company over the past 33 years, turning it into a global enterprise and ensuring the name Sennheiser electronic is associated all over the world with the highest possible quality and cutting-edge innovation,” said Hans-Dieter Harig, Chairman of the Board of Friends of Hannover University, as he presented the award. He went on to say that as a result, Sennheiser has impressively demonstrated that medium-sized businesses can be very successful in the global marketplace.

In his acceptance speech, Jörg Sennheiser emphasised his ties with Hannover University: “Being awarded the Karmarsch Medal is a huge honour for me and a personal challenge to keep heading in the same direction and also to strive in continuing to train successive future generations.” He said that technical expertise and employee competence lie at the heart of a company’s success and in order to maintain a competitive edge in the future and meet the impending shortage in specialists, it is crucial to awaken young people’s interest in technology and show them the career opportunities that exist within this field.

Like his father Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, who set up the company in 1945, Jörg Sennheiser has always championed the training and development of young academics. He taught at Hannover University for 24 years, lecturing there on electroacoustics, and was made an honorary professor in 1991. “For me it wasn’t just about students grasping theoretical concepts. It was and remains important to me to link theory to practice and in the process get young people excited about the great diversity acoustics has to offer.” Research and development have always been very important at Sennheiser. Jörg Sennheiser is convinced that “innovative products need time and engineers sufficient freedom to research and discover.” If you stand up for ideas, you are investing directly in the future.
