Sennheiser keeps Gary Chaw pitch-perfect in Hong Kong

Audio engineers at Gary Chaw’s recent Welcome to My World Asia Live Tour 2009 in Hong Kong unleashed a formula for vocal success with quality equipment and support from Sennheiser. The results, according to them, were impressive.

The Malaysian-born star, winner of the Best Male Mandarin Singer at the 19th Golden Melody Awards last year, captivated a sell-out crowd of 12,000 at the one-night concert on August 21 at the AsiaWorld-Arena. Based mainly in Taiwan, 30-year-old Chaw is known for ‘super’-themed hits such as Superwoman and Supermarket.

Supporting the Hong Kong leg of the tour, Sennheiser availed the SKM 5200 wireless handheld with Neumann KK 105 and MD 5232 capsules, SK 5212 bodypack transmitters with HSP 4 headset microphones, EM 2050 twin receivers, EK 2000 IEM bodypack receivers, e 904 drum microphones and e 906 dynamic guitar amp microphones.

The 2000 Series wireless monitoring system was especially welcomed by monitor engineer Lung, who was using it for the first time. “The new IEMs were very impressive, particularly the ability to switch frequencies by pressing the Sync button. It makes my job very easy during frequency programming,” said Lung. “The RF stability from the G2 to the 2000 series is impressive — it gives me a lot of confidence in every event I undertake.”

Front-of-house engineer R. Leung, an industry veteran of over 15 years, singled out the KK 105 and e 904 as his key equipment for the concert. ““The Sennheiser e 904 is my favorite microphone for the toms — no other tom microphones can match it. Commenting on Gary’s vocal microphone, he shared, “I was amazed at the clarity of Gary’s voice on the KK 105. I did a live record of two tracks and during playback, it struck me that the vocals sounded extraordinarily good! Neumann is well known in the recording industry for live sound recording, and my personal experience has been that it truly lives up to its name.”
