Super Band rides on Sennheiser for world tour

Grouping together four veterans from the Taiwanese music industry and packing them off on a six-month world tour is no easy feat, but one tour manager has astutely tapped on Sennheiser expertise and equipment to guarantee success.

According to George Trivino, tour director of the Super Band World Tour from March to September 2009, the heavyweight quartet comprising Luo Dayou, Jonathan Lee, Wakin Chau and Zhang Zhenyue not only released more than 70 albums in their own careers but also held more than 350 individual concerts over a collective span of at least 20 years. Luo is an influential singer-songwriter who many believe revolutionalised Chinese pop two decades earlier, while Jonathan Lee is a prolific record producer, singer and songwriter. Chau, also known as Emil Chau to many in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, similarly needs no introduction — having
rose to fame in the 1990s with his easy-listening ballads. Better known as A-Yue, Zhang is a songwriter, singer and guitarist, and fronts the popular Free9 band.

The unique and powerful combination, however, signalled a host of production challenges right from the start, related Trivino. “Each artist had his own preferences in musical equipment, production system and crew. It was very tough in the beginning to come up with a production crew and to design a production system which would be able to satisfy all their needs.” He added, “Then it was very tough to convince them to give up what they are used to and follow what we had designed.”

Through audio partner LAB, Sennheiser availed SKM 5200 wireless mics paired with MD 5235 dynamic capsules, e 900 series wired mics for instruments and backup vocals, ew 300 IEM G2 wireless personal monitoring systems, EM 550 G2 twin receivers and HD 25 dynamic headphones.

Tour director George Trivino “Roping in Sennheiser has been a rewarding decision,” Trivino pointed out. “Now I believe that we have put together the best crew and have the best technical and production support that Asia has ever seen.” He further remarked: “The initial sell-out concerts in Taipei, Hong Kong, Beijing and Hangzhou were a fantastic reward and recognition of the efforts put in by the various partners and personnel. In fact, Super Band now holds the record for ticket sales in both Beijing and Hangzhou!”

Equally thrilled was Vince Tan, Sennheiser’s relations manager for the Asia-Pacific region. “We
are very proud to be collaborating with Super Band — these artists are influential figures in the music industry and demand nothing short of perfection. Once again, Sennheiser delivered reliable equipment and professional services — and matched, if not exceeded, the expectations of a wide range of professionals in the music industry.”

On their world tour, Super Band will perform in more than 20 cities in China, as well as make stops in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.
