All ears: Sennheiser presents the latest generation of its most successful wireless monitoring system

With the third “evolution wireless” generation, audio specialist Sennheiser has also further improved the wireless monitoring system that is part of the series. Professional musicians and bands will benefit from numerous new features, such as true diversity reception, a switchable Hi Boost function and a switchable multi-level limiter. Artists can adapt the audio signal to their individual preferences using a five-band graphic equalizer in the transmitter.

The system’s bodypack receiver and rack-mount stereo transmitter come in their usual rugged design, with numerous technical highlights concealed inside their tough metal housings. “The world’s top-selling wireless monitoring system has got even better,” said product manager Martin Fischer. “For example, the rack-mount transmitter now features an Ethernet connector. All the monitor engineer needs is a standard Ethernet switch and the system can be conveniently monitored and controlled by a PC with our ‘Wireless Systems Manager’. This software is being continuously expanded and is freely available to our customers as a download.”

The transmitter…
…features an integrated equalizer as a special highlight, enabling artists to adjust the sound to its optimum. The RF output power can be switched between 30 mW and 10 mW, allowing users to choose between a greater range or improved multi-channel capability. The stereo transmitter now has a loop-through socket for the audio signal, which means that the band signal has to be picked up only once at the mixing console before being made available to all band members for their personal mix. “We have included this feature in response to our customers’ requests,” Fischer said. The audio frequency response has become wider (25–15,000 Hz), this providing the artists with an even more precise and detailed monitor signal. A universal power supply unit with exchangeable plugs for different countries makes the SR 300 IEM G3 ideally suited for international touring.

The bodypack receiver…
…can be switched between mono, stereo and Focus Mode. In Focus Mode, musicians can adjust their personal mix between the band signal and their own instrument or voice. The new “Adaptive Diversity” reception, which uses the earphone cable as a second antenna, further enhances the receiver’s operating reliability. A switchable multi-channel limiter protects the artist’s hearing from excessive volumes and volume peaks. If the receiver is to be used with magnetic instead of dynamic earphones, a Hi Boost function can be actuated to provide full sound in the treble range. As an environmentally friendly feature, the bodypack receivers can also be used with Sennheiser’s rechargeable battery packs. The batteries can be recharged through external charging contacts while remaining in the receivers.

The monitor engineer…
…can now conveniently synchronise the receivers with the corresponding transmitters via an infrared interface. Up to 1,680 switchable frequencies per frequency range are now available over a 42 MHz switching bandwidth. 20 channel banks each have up to 16 presets, and six further channel banks are freely programmable in 25-kHz steps. The audio sensitivity can now be adjusted in a range of 42 dB. The monitor engineer can programme the system on two levels using a back-lit dot matrix display. The User Level contains everything that is immediately needed for a show, while the Advanced Level includes basic settings such as synchronisation parameters that do not need to be changed every day.

The wireless monitoring system will be available from May 2009. In the Americas, the system will be available from July 2009.
